Promises

A promise is "a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen." To make a promise is to "assure someone that one will definitely do, give, or arrange something; to undertake or declare that something will happen; to make a pledge, to vow, to give your word that you will do a thing."

Promises are pledges or vows to do something or to act in a certain way, and they are based om your sworn word of honor. Some people make promises lightly, with little or no intention of keeping them later. However, the promise does not know that you did not mean it and so binds you to perform the promise no matter how long it takes or what it ultimately requires of you to fulfill it.

Edna Lister on Promises

When you abide in Christ, you continually maintain your contact with Light, which ensures that you will produce perfect fruit, and a perfect harvest. Your Father, the great Pruner, will prune every broken branch eventually. You may also assume greater responsibility and use the word "let," which is your great pruner. The Master’s promise for those who abide is, If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will and it shall be done unto you. – John 15:7. "Done unto you" is a peculiar wording when "done with" or "done for" would make more sense. "Done unto" implies all "added things." You have glorified, justified, and pleased your Father when you abide in the Christed consciousness. Christed love and joy then abides in you. This is no hollow, shallow promise, but the Word of the universal Christ. – Edna Lister, Abiding in Christ, October 7, 1934.

The Master commanded his disciples not to depart from Jerusalem, but to "wait for the promise of the Father," until they receive the Power of the Holy Spirit. Call upon the Christ, the Head Master, accepting no substitute. – Edna Lister, Understanding, January 23, 1935.

You must accept God's promises as applying to you. Acceptance is conversion, the revelation of the indwelling divinity. To "put on Christ" is becoming aware of truth, which is not new. Acceptance is also implied in the principle of nonresistance, which encompasses Christ's Crucifixion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension. Power, life, and strength are all yours to use when you have done away with the old. – Edna Lister, Prayer: The Broad Highway, May 15, 1935.

Melchizedek’s first promise is, To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. – Revelation 2:7. Melchizedek’s second promise is, He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. – Revelation 2:11. Melchizedek’s third promise is, To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. – Revelation 2:17. Melchizedek’s fourth promise is, He that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations. – Revelation 2:26. Melchizedek’s fifth promise is, He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment. – Revelation 3:5. Melchizedek’s sixth promise is, Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out. – Revelation 3:12. Melchizedek’s seventh promise is, To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne. – Revelation 3:21. – Edna Lister, Seven Churches of the Revelation, January 3, 1936.

In the Via Christa, you have the path to follow to overcome the self and the world, to receive the promises the Lord has made to His Elect. Do you believe this? Do you accept? – Edna Lister, The Light on the Path, September 12, 1937.

All God’s promises shall be fulfilled after their degree and kind. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, August 14, 1938.

God has promised, "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." – Isaiah 65:24. – Edna Lister, Being a Seer and a Prophet, June 25, 1939.

Stand in absolute confidence in the faithfulness of God’s Power and Love to fulfill all His promises. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, August 2, 1940.

Your desire for God’s perfection is according to your soul vision. The Father cannot trust you with more than you can see and hold up in Light for fulfillment. God has promised you many things, but only when you are prepared for it. It has not yet come because of your self. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, April 30, 1942.

Our new creed is "I promise to dare. I promise to do. I promise to live as a challenge to all darkness." – Edna Lister, If I Be Lifted Up, May 30, 1943.

Make decrees of your desires. Declare that the Father has so promised to do all things for you. Raise your voice in prayers of praise and let songs of praise ascend for all you have. Thus, you redouble your gifts and fulfill all your desires and promises. Praise is the creator. Praise is the only attitude of increase for all good. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, September 18, 1944.

This is your hour of complete fulfillment of all desires and promises of God. You are your own creator. You are your own present fulfillment. Enough love and praise will surely release enough of your own already God-given substance to fulfill your dreams, desires, plans, and needs. Enough praise fills your hour full to overflowing, enough to fulfill your own promises, and your destiny. Enough love will do it. You will never reach too high a point of zeal, of love, of joy. You can keep expanding, however, into a greater capacity. It takes more substance to build a great ideal than for a small, after-the-world pattern. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, September 17, 1945.

The law so declares that each soul shall be given enough substance of Light, stored in his Oversoul star, to fill all his molds of desire, and to bring to pass all his needs, promised him of God. Each soul must release this substance by transforming it from invisible Light to a lower visible form of substance. Each soul must transform his own substance, from storage in star to earth mold. If you have not yet managed to do so, you have not yet praised enough. For the law further declares that only praise of singing and praise of rejoicing shall release enough love substance to build into fulfillment God’s promises to you. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, October 1, 1945.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness. – Matthew 6:33. You must obey this law, completely depending on fulfilling the promise that it contains, "and all these things shall be added unto you." This is your promise that you shall have your miracles. – Edna Lister, Six Creative Laws, December 1945.

"I vow to hide nothing from myself so I may face my God with clean hands and a clean heart."
I know. I promise myself. I vow to face my God – these vows are important. You must know that you know. To promise yourself is harder than to promise God. Once the soul makes the full promise, it must be obeyed. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, March 15, 1946.

Your only true task is to let go of self and let God use you. Forget any additions or amendments that "little me" tries to make. Just one tiny "I" or "my" can block the fulfillment of every dream of your life, heart and soul. So, bring through all the Power, might, majesty and glory from your own star, waiting there for you to use as Love-Light, going forth to lift all darkness from earth. Know that you are a conqueror now, that you cannot fail now, that love makes all desires visible now. As a creator, every promise shall be fulfilled now. Hold. Stand. Know. Become. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, July 3, 1947.

Light, being love, fulfills all the promises. Enough love shall bring to pass all your dream-desires and your promises. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, December 13, 1948.

The Old Testament prophecies and promises all begin with the phrase, “Thus says the Lord,” and always, without fail, each is followed by “And it came to pass.” Every promise shall be fulfilled. Yet you must do the fulfilling with love. Then you shall know “And it came to pass.” – Edna Lister, And It Came to Pass, April 30, 1950.

This is a glorious time. We are fulfilling our promises to God, and His promises to us are "coming to pass." We have released almost enough love-substance for God to work with to "bring to pass" what we must have for our continued growth. We have won so far. Now we need to release ever more love to bring to pass our own dream-desires. Let us double and redouble our efforts. Let us really work together now as all love, without thought of self, to see Light reign on earth, to watch the ways in which God can now work to bring to pass will be glorious. He has new agents, new ways, new Power to use. Let us rejoice that we are free. We are receiving all rewards above and below now. We rejoice and accept our own now. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 18, 1950.

Memorize one Beatitude each week or any other verse of Promise. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, April 5, 1953.

Never hold anyone to a promise. Leave him free. Love him, praise him and let him go. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 26, 1953.

To understand a need is to become the answer in expression. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, December 1, 1953.

To ask another to make a promise is an outer manifestation of rebellion, willfulness, pride and stubbornness against high Councils. Its odor is a stench before God. Such people make themselves subservient to evil by their hatred. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, August 4, 1955.

Every time you make a promise, the equivalent goes to that person to fulfill the promise immediately. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 12, 1958.

The time comes when you must fulfill your promise by doing, not by talking about it. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, September 1, 1958.

When another makes a promise, he opens the way for the substance of the promise, even if he does not keep the promise. When you receive substance from another source, your acceptance and love have crossed out his debt. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 11, 1959.

Christ’s death assured his promises. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, March 3, 1960.

God will fulfill every promise. You delay their fulfillment because of your repeated faltering. There is no discredit in faltering, only delay in fulfilling of promises. If your delays involved only you, it would not be so serious, but a single delay for you becomes double delays for all whom you love. Yet even when you are doubting, a part of you is always touching the Source. Holding would be far simpler for you. You need to conquer self and cease holding back the fulfillment of God’s promises. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 30, 1961.

All promises made will be fulfilled, but the Father must use the Power you release to fulfill the promises. It depends on your faith. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, October 29, 1961.

Declare, "The Father fulfills every promise this moment." – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, April 22, 1962.

You shall fulfill all the promises God has made you in Scripture, provided you spend a few seconds every hour in communion with the Father. The good is yours already. Declare, "You have promised healing, Father. Let it be so." To orient yourself in time and space, just say, "Here I am Father." To seek the kingdom of heaven first for all your needs, in all situations is essential. Move up in consciousness and listen. Ascend to the Father a few minutes in every waking hour. If you do not contact the Father once an hour, you have descended into self, so remain high in consciousness. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 28, 1962.

If you cannot be amenable to law and hold yourself in conquering, your guards will put their fingers in the dike to hold, but will reprimand you mightily. Where you are so lacking, you think you have surrendered and are not self-conscious, but you should think again. If you choose to have your own way, you forget God and wallow in self. When it is God’s way, you do not get into trouble, but into beauty, glory, fulfilled promises. All this is why they must give us law in strength from above, as the only strength. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, June 17, 1963.

Hold fast in all ways to your gains. Do not let anything drag you down. Only one way lies open, and that is the up way, the exercise of your confidence in the Power of God to overcome all obstacles, and the quiet assurance that He will fulfill all promises made – and so it shall be. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, July 22, 1963.

You cannot stand fast for God without the strength that full faith in His promises gives you. It has been hard – it is hard to stand, and it will be hard tomorrow – but you have the right attitude, and if you put it into action, you can make it a soul habit. The way lies clear before you if you will do one thing at a time, living one day at a time. Fill today’s needs, necessities and joys, and stop living for a year ahead. Then your strength will be equal to each task, your joy in little things will increase. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, November 28, 1963.

The law, and the secret of ascension, is attention to detail, which also covers alertness, awareness, etc. You may do nothing that makes the other fellow uncomfortable. If doing it always is not right for the whole world, doing it once is not right for you. Pray for protection only after you have done everything you can on the outer to cover the need for protection. If you pay attention to detail, you have miracles. Attention to detail is imperative. The Father makes the promises, but you must fulfill them by praise. Praise is a detail. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, November 30, 1964.

Remember, hour by hour, whom you are, to whom you belong and to whom your devotion ascends. Then you will feel divine strength and hold yourself above the self, the hindrance and limitation that keep you in delay of fulfilled promises. When your devotion must expend itself in the payment of idle words and willful self, nothing is left to pay promises. This is the delay. You must fulfill your promises to God before He can fulfill the promises to you. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, April 4, 1965.

God has not promised to make the path easier, but He has promised love, joy and that the crooked will be made straight. Power would do this for every soul on earth who calls for it. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, October 20, 1966.

God shall fulfill every promise according to your degree and kind of steadfastness and "no shadow of turning." – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, October 27, 1966.

Release the Power to fulfill God’s promises, and in all ways show the world the right way to live. You shall be held and guided. You shall have the answers to your questions, and know when to speak and what to say. As long as you stand in and under the Light, speaking only from Light, you can know this. Your holding fast to the Power and the glory, and watching for the fulfillment of dreams and promises, shall bring through endless answers. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, November 9, 1966.

Let your soul speak to the world in beautiful terms and ways. There is a time for chatter, and a time for silence. The time now is for silence, to release enough Power of a high degree with a condensed vibration. The time has come for fulfillment of every promise and all your dreams can add to the original promises. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, May 17, 1967.

So you can see that the statement, "In quiet and confidence shall be your strength," and every book of the Bible is filled with warnings. Stand still and know the promises, and the need for waiting. When you have thoroughly grasped that routine, then you touch the point of wisdom that Solomon reached. – Edna Lister, Unpublished Papers, November 21, 1969.

Promises in the New Testament

Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. – Luke 24:46-49.

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. – Acts 2:38-39.

[God] Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. – Ephesians 1:9-13.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord... Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. – Ephesians 6:1-4, 6.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. – Galatians 3:20-29.

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. – 2 Peter 1:2-8.

There shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. – 2 Peter 3:3-13.

Promises in the Old Testament

God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, and I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; and with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. – Genesis 9:8-17.

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord's passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. And the children of Israel went away, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. – Exodus 12:21-28.

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. – Deuteronomy 6:1-9.

That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the Lord thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth. – Deuteronomy 23:23.

This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice: And the Lord hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; and to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken. – Deuteronomy 26:16-19.

Etymology of promise: "a pledge, vow," from Old French promesse "promise, guarantee, assurance" and directly from Latin promissum "a promise," noun use of neuter past participle of promittere "send forth; let go; foretell; assure beforehand, promise," from pro- "before" + mittere "to put, send." The ground sense is "declaration made about the future, about some act to be done or not done."
