Consciousness

By Linda Mihalic

Consciousness is a state of being: to be aware of one’s environment, one’s own existence, sensations and thoughts, to be mentally perceptive or alert, awake, and capable of thought, will or perception. Awareness is also a state of being: having knowledge or discernment of something; attentive and well informed.American Heritage Dictionary
What is consciousness? We start at Genesis 1:3 in the Hebrew (יְהִי אוֹר; וַיְהִי-אוֹר) it reads Let light be; and light was. Genesis is the book of Beginning and the 3rd verse signifies the action of Creation. We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.–2 Corinthians 4:18
God is Light. Light is Mind. Light as Mind is conscious. Light as Mind is Soul. God is The One, the Only, The Eternal, The Immortal. All is One in God. Edna Lister said, God the One desired to create and a universe was born. God the One manifested as God the Many uncountable souls that inhabit the Universe of universes. God as Light is Soul, and Soul is Mind, that Mind which was in Christ Jesus.
Consciousness is rooted in the principles of Wisdom and Mind; the greater the Light, the greater the consciousness. Conscience and conscious have the same root, implying that to be fully conscious is to have a conscience and vice versa. Light is God’s conscious identity. Consciousness exists on a continuum from the sleeping rock to God the Source of all consciousness.
Consciousness is an absolute principle: God is absolute consciousness and is absolutely conscious. Consciousness is an abstract principle, a law of being, a soul virtue and a mental faculty.

Edna Lister on Consciousness

God does not make anyone into a tempter or disintegrator; those who become disintegrators do so because vanity and greed for Power motivate them, which sends them into unconsciousness.–Edna Lister, October 25, 1938.

Be constantly conscious of the fullness of your relationship to God.–Edna Lister, November 6, 1938.

You will reach many levels of consciousness, for heaven has millions of degrees.–Edna Lister, September 1, 1939.

Let us endeavor to realize soul consciousness every moment, realize the true soul in each other, looking past this outer unreality.—Edna Lister, April 23, 1941.

The Truth is reflected in the individual soul’s consciousness.–Edna Lister, July 3, 1941.

You can ascend to become conscious of earth and the inner simultaneously. Anyone on earth may have a similar experience.–Edna Lister, July 3, 1941.

Do not allow anyone or anything to drag your consciousness down for even one second.–Edna Lister, November 3, 1941.

The main work we do is consciously to lift, to hold earth for God’s Light to fill. The one who consciously knows what and why he is doing the work does a greater work.–Edna Lister, January 12, 1942.

When you become conscious of any taint but do nothing about it, you close the Gates of Light on yourself.–Edna Lister, April 13, 1942.

Light, color, tone, number, and name (form), five steps in ascending consciousness: First, in physical form (name), you are self-conscious; humbleness and weeping mark the first descent of the Oversoul. You must do and be without being self-conscious of doing or being. Second, number is soul consciousness; you choose and separate soul from self. You are conscious of choosing, but it is sacrificial through number. Third, under tone, you become conscious of the importance of being a mouthpiece of the Father, and make no more choice, but hear the choice. Fourth, color brings seeing, consciousness of being a member of the Elect. Fifth, Light is what the soul becomes. The descent of Oversoul requires "becoming" the Light.–Edna Lister, May 16, 1942.

Christed consciousness is never conscious of being itself; it is as a little child, unconscious of itself.–Edna Lister, December 1, 1942.

When you completely unify Love, Wisdom and Selflessness within yourself, then you are fully, forever, entirely God-conscious and never can depart from it.–Edna Lister, February 22, 1944.

You see spiritually by observation, using your powers of induction, deduction and analysis. Keep the subconscious posted on all that takes place around you. You rarely have time to work this out quietly, alone, but must do it right along with everything else. Do not concentrate on the subconscious, for it will induct from the outer. Charge the subconscious to analyze as you go, then go about your business of being fully aware and mentally conscious. In other words, concentrate to pay full attention so you know what you are doing. Leave the super-conscious, or Oversoul, free to dwell and create above.

Charge the little self to be alert on all three levels while you look up occasionally to the Oversoul and track what is happening. You recall from the subconscious since it retains all experiences, conditions and situations. Go to your high place, your room of Light to recharge your batteries, keep every memory cell alive, and maintain your whole house in order.–Edna Lister, June 30, 1944.

Every word, every choice has a hidden reason plus a conscious one.–Edna Lister, November 1, 1944.

Little self lives by creature consciousness, which includes induction from the five senses and comparison.–Edna Lister, The Pearl of Great Price, April 13, 1945.

Your unconscious thinking holds you in bondage.–Edna Lister, April 24, 1945.

Ascension of consciousness is a constant vigilant battle to overcome the self. The subconscious digs in its claws in the end, for it has no desire to let go. You must remain alert, alive, and aware.–Edna Lister, July 9, 1945.

Every infinitesimal deed, thought and attitude is vitally important, even unconscious ones of which you are unaware.–Edna Lister, July 9, 1945.

You do what is still hidden in you; your every word, your answers to lessons and the reprimands you receive reveal what you have hidden.–Edna Lister, July 9, 1945.

Let all hidden things come to the surface of the conscious mind. Look yourself in the eye, then conquer all petty self.–Edna Lister, July 25, 1945.

God has given you full God-consciousness, complete for every hour of every day; you must hold it.–Edna Lister, September 22, 1945.

The mind must rise above just thinking about it to the point of conscious knowing. The conscious mind must become master of the subconscious.–Edna Lister, September 29, 1945.

Never let the body, the appetitive soul, dictate. When it does, you know that subconscious mind, controlled by emotions, is doing it. Analyze your actions to determine whether emotional or mental selfishness is dictating them.–Edna Lister, September 29, 1945.

Aspiration and inspiration are facets of instinct. An animal looks up (aspiration), smells the air (inspiration) and listens.–Edna Lister, November 13, 1947.

The self-conscious creature operates under instinctive desire, uncontrolled imagination and self-will.–Edna Lister, November 13, 1947.

The creator is soul conscious, and knows that he creates darkness when desire, imagination and will lead to the self.–Edna Lister, November 13, 1947.

The body can be light, free and glorious only when your consciousness is in harmony with God.–Edna Lister, October 9, 1958.

When you descend in consciousness, it is like a dark nightmare.–Edna Lister, June 15, 1959.

As you go out at night, your Guards take any part of self-tainted soul that you have lifted from your physical cells and pour Oversoul in its place, which pushes self nearer the surface of your consciousness. This is why you may awaken feeling low.—Edna Lister, June 29, 1959.

Healing is a direct result of being able to move from a lesser to a higher vibration or a state of consciousness.–Edna Lister, What Is Healing, May 17, 1960.

Live on three levels at once, the appetitive subconscious, rational consciousness, and Oversoul super-conscious mind. Hold yourself high in consciousness even while doing something mundane, such as watching TV or mowing the lawn.–Edna Lister, August 3, 1961.

The veil of illusion drops when you break law or go off on something like political opinions or in-law-itis.—Edna Lister, April 4, 1963.

Each must prove that he or she can compete among men while living freely and fully conscious on the inner.–Edna Lister, April 11, 1963.

The true fall of man was not the sin of Eve and Adam the command not to eat the fruit in the Garden, is losing consciousness of the rapture of standing at the Source of All Light.–Edna Lister, June 7, 1963.

The one real sin you commit against your soul is to forget who you are, that you come from the Source of All Light, and that God’s glory fills you. All outer negativity comes from a lapse of this consciousness.–Edna Lister, December 4, 1966.

God’s Power uses you with every conscious or unconscious thought.–Edna Lister, January 5, 1967.

You are unconscious of the smoothness of God’s life, but too often conscious only of the lack of smoothness in your life.–Edna Lister, May 14, 1967.

You must be unconsciously conscious of your soul’s greatness.–Edna Lister, May 18, 1967.

The Oversoul is always working above, and you can be outwardly conscious of it.–Edna Lister, November 7, 1968.

In some place, sometime you must learn the lesson of standing in the Light, as the Light, never unconsciously taking in worldly ideas or impressions.–Edna Lister, July 27, 1969.

Your words reveal your beliefs. If you take in ugliness and what people say, you are not standing in the Light, knowing that Light cleanses everything unlike the original ideas in God’s Mind. You have no need to roll in others’ spewed out messes instead of Light, except that you love it instead of the Light, which is God.–Edna Lister, July 27, 1969.

Create within yourself a greater conscious sense of holding and being held. Appreciate and consciously hold a wholeness and awareness of being with your Father. Do not be satisfied with part-time knowing or being half-held. Feel the Arms of Light holding you, always allowing you freedom to choose and move, yet always holding.–Edna Lister, March 15, 1970.

You must grow in living by soul consciousness until it is your personal, moment by moment closeness and consciousness without needing to be in absolute silence.–Edna Lister, January 7, 1971.

Light is God’s conscious identity.–Edna Lister, Undated Papers, 1933-1971.

Dropping in consciousness is like unplugging the fan on a hot day—you feel the heat of self quickly.–Edna Lister, Undated Papers, 1933-1971.

Treatments for Consciousness

I now honor God so highly that I cannot realize anything of earth’s negatives, but only that which is real can register upon my consciousness.–Edna Lister, April 23, 1941.

The following words really are states of consciousness.
  1. Recognition: Instant, because, This is mine or it could not come to me. It has my name on it, which I gave it as I sent it forth.
  2. Acceptance: Instant. This is mine to lift right now. I accept this as my present lesson. Let me, oh God, gather from it every tiny bit of knowledge for my future guidance and protection.
  3. Repentance: Here I am, Father. Let Light shine upon the spot of unconscious memory which drew this lesson to me, and let Thy Light cleanse and scrape clean the platter of my self and lift it into Thy Glory now.
  4. Surrender: Here am I, Father, now surrendering unto Thee all my past, present and future, that I may be Thy perfect servant of all the Power.
  5. Sacrifice: Father, let me find new things of self, still buried in my subconscious, hidden from my conscious mind, to lay upon Thy altar forever. Accept my soul, heart, body and affairs as living sacrifices unto Thee, to be used as Thy servant and strong pillar in Thy Temple.–Edna Lister, July 17, 1945.

Etymology of consciousness: Latin conscius: com- "with" + scire, "to know."

Consciousness is an absolute principle.

Consciousness is an abstract principle.

Consciousness is a law of being.

Consciousness is a soul virtue.

Consciousness is a soul faculty.

The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.
–Theodore Roethke

Quotes

We have learnt that the exploration of the external world by the methods of physical science leads not to a concrete reality but to a shadow world of symbols, beneath which those methods are unadapted for penetrating. Feeling that there must be more behind, we return to our starting point in human consciousness—the one centre where more might become known. There we find other stirrings, other revelations than those conditioned by the world of symbols… Physics most strongly insists that its methods do not penetrate behind the symbolism. Surely then that mental and spiritual nature of ourselves, known in our minds by an intimate contact transcending the methods of physics, supplies just that… which science is admittedly unable to give.–Arthur Stanley Eddington

We have a closed circle of consistency here: the laws of physics produce complex systems, and these complex systems lead to consciousness, which then produces mathematics, which can then encode in a succinct and inspiring way the very underlying laws of physics that gave rise to it.–Roger Penrose

Life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end.–Virginia Woolf
