The Armor of Light: The Principle of Divine Protection

By Thomas Parker Boyd

We sent out the Armor of Light during 1916 to meet a very great need in the midst of the world war. Tens of thousands of copies went out to training camps and other places where our men were assembled on both sides of the Atlantic. Thousands went out to parents of soldiers. From many of these and from the men themselves, there have come many words of appreciation of the message of the little booklet.

During the struggle and afterward it was my custom to give a copy to every bride whom I married. After the war closed, I married a young woman and a young soldier still in the uniform, and when I gave her a copy, there came a funny little grin on his face. He dug down into his uniform and brought out a soiled and dog-eared copy, which he had carried across with him.

Several times on the way across, submarines attacked, but the transport escaped. Often he went "over the top" with "The Armor" in his pocket. Often when resting, he said, one soldier would read it to as large a group as could hear, then they would pass it to another group. He declared that something about it gave him the feeling of safety, and he went through the great adventure and returned unscathed.

There is so much of real value in the message that we preserve it substantially as first published, but we herewith work out the principle of Protection to apply to all the needs of life.

Humanly speaking, we expose life to as many vicissitudes in everyday life as it was ever on the battlefield. The fear complex, which seems such a universal possession, needs some antidote. Hence this adaptation of the message to the needs of every walk in life.

The high mystical note sounded throughout may not seem applicable to daily life by the practical minded man on the street, but it has the virtue of being susceptible to test, and it will prove to have the pragmatic quality of "working," to him who will intelligently try it.

Sending the little booklet with its message of protection forth on its larger mission, I send the blessing of the Father to those who read and receive it.
The Author

The Magna Charta

"Take unto you the whole Armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with Truth, and having on the Breastplate of Righteousness; and your feet shod with a preparation of the Gospel of Peace; above all taking the Shield of Faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the Helmet of Salvation. And the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God; praying always; watching with all diligence." – Ephesians 6:13-17.

Looking to the Source of Protection

A man passing through a woodland on a foggy morning, was suddenly confronted by a specter of gigantic size and grotesque form. Resisting his first impulse to flee, he pressed forward to meet the unknown, who, when he emerged from the strangely magnifying power of the fog proved to be his own brother William.

Thus does the mist of matter, which came over the face of the whole earth, distort the appearance of things until we can only find the reality by disregarding the appearance. The dualities of existence forever confront us in this life of material incarnation. Every report of the senses returns a verdict of negation, limitation, and relativity.

We have so long accepted the appearance that we usually act without waiting to find out what the reality is behind them. We have seen the sun rise and set so often that realizing that it does nothing of the sort is difficult. We have spoken of up and down, the North and South, so much that it seldom occurs to us that they are merely accommodations to human thinking, and in fact do not exist.

The whole world of appearance so fills our minds that we rarely think of the Great Reality of which appearance is but a dim expression. We see light and darkness succeed each other so constantly that we forget the Reality, "Who is Light and in Him is no darkness at all." We so regularly yield to the need of sleep, that we fail to think of the Reality, "Who neither slumbers nor sleeps."

Having given to the things of appearance their full claim to our obedience, let us turn now to the Reality, and by obeying the injunction to "Look unto me and be ye saved – or healed or protected or whatever ye need," find the source of protection.

Turn the mind away from the reports of the senses to God and His spiritual activities. Fill the mind with the image of Perfection. Declare to yourself, "My imagination is stayed on perfection." Remember that "Faith is the spiritual perception of Reality, the discernment that the thing I hope for is now Real." Let your mind meditate on the highest ideal of Reality.

The Formula Backing Protection

God Is. God Is All There Is. God Is All There Is of Being, Life, Spirit, Principle, Substance, Spiritual or Material. He is the Totality of Being, including the Unconditioned Absolute, and the conditioned relative.

In His Unity of Being, I am forever at one with Him. In His Omnipresence, I am forever in the secret of His presence. In His Immanence I am forever held in the substance of His Being, so identified with Him that "I and the Father are one."

All things that appear exist first in the Spiritual Substance of His Being. In this great Causative Substance of Being all activity is governed by Law and Order. The Law of Love, the Law of Truth, and the Law of Life. He does not act apart from these. It is the Divine Order to work through these laws.

Realizing my oneness with His Substance, I declare that the Laws of Being are now operating in and through me, so that, the Divine Order is now established in me.

God's Law of Health now operates in me to make my body perfectly well.

God's Law of Truth is now moving within me causing my mind to think His thoughts alone, keeping my mind clear, keen and normal.

God's Law of Life now governs all my affairs so that, "no evil shall befall me, neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling."

While I wake and work, the Spirit of the Lord goeth before me, making easy my way. While I sleep, "He that keepeth me shall neither slumber nor sleep."

When I go forth to business, I recall that He teaches me to get gain. He teaches me wisdom and fairness in my dealings with men, and protects my business from the unscrupulous.

My domestic relationships are in His keeping. Every child shall, under His guidance, learn the best way of expression and success.

My social contacts are kept safely by His presence so that the friends who should be mine come to me, and others are kept away.

My possessions are the expressed ideas of God and are governed by Law and Order. I always have everything I need, when I need it, and as long as I need it, and then love causes me to pass it on to others.

I bless everything that comes to me, I bless everything that I send out from me. I include in His keeping care, everything with which I have to do. "There shall not a hoof be left behind."

I trust Him with everything, and because I give Him perfect trust, He keeps me in perfect peace.

Because I am substance of His Substance, life of His Life, spirit of His Spirit, mind of His Mind, "it is God that worketh in me both to will and to do."

Use this formula until it becomes fixed in your mind as your established state of consciousness.

The purpose of this formula is to help you to perfect yourself in the art of picturing out the things you want to be, instead of the things you do not want. Jesus said, "Whatever things ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye do have them." It was as if he said, "Whatever things you desire, picture them out to God when you ask Him for them, and picture your heavenly Father giving them to you, and yourself giving thanks for them, and living in possession of them, and you shall have them."

Learn the divine art of seeing reality, as Elisha saw it at Dothan, as Daniel saw it in the lion's den, as Jesus saw it at Nazareth when the multitude would have done him violence. These did not seem to notice the appearance of things, but to keep their attention fixed on the picture of divine deliverance. That furnishes the clue to the maze.

The thing upon which your attention is centered becomes more real to you, while the thing you disregard ceases to trouble you. Therefore cultivate the habit of turning your imagination to the highest spiritual reality and you will find power to keep you in all your ways.

Picture that the engineer, fireman, conductor and all officials from the train dispatcher to the section gang, are working for your protection and safety, and you will find a sense of safety in travel.

Picture the whole police force and other agencies for protection as being directed to keep all your interests and it will help you to realize the oversight of a never failing Presence in whom all your affairs are safe.

Picture that the movements of the whole planetary system are so guided that neither wind nor weather can act apart from His jurisdiction, and you can feel safe in the "tornado belt" or the "earthquake region" or any other place where people live in terror of the elements.

Include in this wise supervision, your lands and crops and business and possessions and no trouble shall come nigh thy dwelling.

With this outline of the principle of protection you ought to be able to work out a mental picture of protection for any interest in life.

The Armor of Light

A message of protection for the men and women of the Armed Forces, and of comfort to the parents who send them.

If ye abide in me and my words abide in you ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done. – The Christ.

Material expression has reached the limit of its destructiveness, and we must turn to the constructive achievements of spiritual forces for a decision.

The triumphs in this war shall be won by spiritual, rather than sheer brute, forces.

When peace comes it will come through the triumph of moral obligation to help our fellows rather than to destroy them.

While the nation sends forth the flower of its strength to defend the weak and uphold the right, and to perpetuate freedom on the earth, let us look to that old armory of the Almighty whence has come the weapons of triumph in all ages of history.

Giving them gladly to the cause of humanity, let us send them forth clothed with the panoply of light so that "no evil shall befall them, neither any plague come nigh their dwelling."

Let us with uplifted eye behold the Changeless One lifting above them the shield of His protecting presence which shall keep them in all their ways. Even the most loyal of us would criticize the government if it failed to fully equip our boys and supply them with the material accessories of war, and what shall be said of us who know the limitless resources of spiritual power if we shall fail to furnish them with the real life-preserver.

The Arbiter of Destiny

The praying man determines the life of individuals and of nations. He deals with the ultimate forces. He sees beyond the limitations. He touches and commands the Changeless Actual, identifying himself with the High and Uplifted One he asks what he will and it is done.

All prayer is answered, and the answer will appear sometime, somehow, somewhere. It may not come out of spiritual reality into material expression in just the form we have mentally pictured it, but it will come in the way that is best for us and for others.

Our prayer for another may not cause him to do what we want him to do and as we want him to do, but it will influence him to act in the way that will be best for himself.

The object of our prayer may not be fully conscious that we are praying for him and if so he might not cooperate with us, but the vibration of spiritual activity touches every cell of his body, moves upon every function of his being, endowing him with a wisdom and understanding above his usual state, and clothing him with an armor of spiritual envelopment which shall make him impervious to all the shafts of the enemy.

Prayer must always deal with the individual. The sacredness of individual expression and unfoldment was the key note to the teaching of the Master. National life rested upon the probity of individual life. Social righteousness could have no existence apart from the righteousness of the individual. The peace of the World must come back at last to the individual expression of it. Protection for our boys by companies and regiments and divisions, must rest upon the spiritual protection held over each individual first.

Backing the Man or Woman on the Firing Line

Recognize the available resources. "All things are yours." They are centered in you. You may think of power outside yourself and grow weaker by contrast, but if you think of limitless power centered in you then the sense of strength will spring into full realization; and you will know that "all power is given you in heaven and earth."

Unhesitatingly accept the full measure of the trust. Know that the only limit there can be is the limit you place upon it. "According to your faith it will be unto you," "Be it unto thee even as thou wilt." These words of authority tell you that your faith may call all spiritual forces to your aid, and that your will may direct them to any desired end, and that nothing shall be able to hinder them.

“Ask me of things to come concerning My sons
and concerning the works of My hands command ye Me.” – Isaiah 45:11

Do it as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. A voice of old said to the prophet, "Son of man stand up on thy feet and I will speak to thee." In this sort of praying you get off your face and upon your feet. It is not to play the suppliant but to play the man. When another prophet had exhausted language and imagery in telling the wonders and glories of the world and its creator, he spoke for the Creator in these words: There is your commission given by the great commander himself. There is the end of asking, and supplicating, and waiting. Command the works of His hands. Ask or command what ye will and it shall be done.

Go into action now. Go over the top of all obstacles. Begin to command these spiritual forces to surround your boy, and other boys. Clothe them from head to foot with the whole armor of God, and they will be able to withstand all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Command these forces for all the uses and ends of your own life.

After this manner speak ye: "Thy kingdom come: Thine is the glory forever. Be opened. Come forth." Speak as the Master to the fig tree, to the palsied, to lions mouths, to prison doors, to every form of material danger, and they shall obey.

How and Why the Armor of God Works

Remember, that reality is both relative and absolute. The relative reality is material and may be seen. Absolute reality is spiritual and is unseen. Out of the Unseen all things come into their material expression and return back into it.

The Unseen and Absolute is the undivided and the perfect. Light and darkness, bliss and pain, good and evil, perfection and imperfection, real and apparent, and all other dual manifestations, are the result of material expression, back of which stands the Changeless Actual. He alone is Reality.

Keep before you the fact that you came from God. Out of the center of Divine Being you started and took on material expression and began the process of evolutionary enfoldment. This was your "fall" so graphically set forth in the parable of Eden. It was a coming out of spiritual into material expression. Out of Cosmic into individual consciousness.

You are returning to God. You are moving upward with individual consciousness. You are being clothed with personality, the fixed form of being, and having conscious inherent oneness with God, you are coming to Him again with a separate personality made in his likeness, or in other words the embodiment of all the qualities of Divine Being.

The entire journey outward and inward is known to you. You have forgotten much of it, and you act instinctively often toward ends you know not of, but you are obeying the same divine impulse that the amoeba obeys, whose only sign of consciousness is to distinguish between that which is food and that which is not food.

Obeying that impulse he rises at last in the process of evolution until today his posterity fill the earth with human civilization. And you obey the same divinely planted impulse, often not understanding why, but you know that you shall at last be like Him. You have the final say about how it shall be. Destiny is your own decision and God's, whose you are.

Having then your real self centered in Spiritual Reality, you are partaker of the nature of God, He is centered in you. He comes out of the everywhere into the here in you. He comes out of all eternity into the Now, and you had a voice in coming, you also have a voice in going onward.

For this reason you may "command the works of His hands" so that you may stay out the full time of development no matter if war or pestilence or any other form of relative and material expression seeks to shorten it. With this assurance of inherent right to command, ye shall ask what you will and it shall be done, whether it be long life, or material prosperity, or wisdom of heart.

Remember that the vibrations of spiritual forces are the most potent of all forces. Remember that Jericho fell at the shout of faith. Remember, that Philippian jail was shaken as with an ague by the vibration of prayer and praise. The enemies of Israel of old were impotent so long as the spirit-filled hands of Moses were uplifted.

History records that its men of destiny who identified their lives with the larger purposes of Providence were able to ride unscathed through the storm of battle. "No weapon that was formed against them could prosper." Of such men the Absolute says, "They that war against thee shall be as nothing and as a thing of naught."

Examples of Prayer Treatments

"Send out Thy light and Thy Truth, and let them lead me."

"Thy truth shall be my shield and buckler."

"The Lord is thy shield and thy defense on thy right hand."

"The Lord God is a sun and a shield." Walk in the Light of this truth.

"The Light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

What is this light? The perception of the finality of spiritual forces. It shows us the weapons offensive and defensive. It tells us that safety is in putting on the whole armor of God, by recognizing the finality of spiritual things alone.

This is the shock-absorber. This is the maxim-silencer. Here is the soft pedal. It is the life preserver. The mighty fortress of our God, in which you and yours may be impervious to all the assaults of the enemy.

Lifting the Shield

"Above all lift the shield of Faith," said the inspired one of old. By land, or sea, or sky, hold forth over them this spiritual shield which shall nullify all the material agencies.

Remember that in spiritual perception and reality, there is neither time nor place nor distance nor any other limitation. As long as we look toward the body and material things we are filled with the fears and pains and dangers of materialism, but as soon as we set the eyes upon The Mighty, uplifted One, the Great Within, we begin to be clothed with all health and power.

Steadfastly beholding the Absolute, "The waters do not overflow thee, nor do the flames devour thee." Steadfastly beholding the Changeless One, lions mouths are locked, prison doors are opened, Aeneas walks and pain is not. Hearing the Voice of the Mighty One, Lazarus comes forth and death is not. Touching but the hem of the garment of spirit, disease is not. This shield is Spirit and it is life. It is truth which shall emancipate you from fear for yourself or for your loved one.

It will give inspiration to the leaders of the nation, and skill, and bravery and a grasp on the divine resources so that the cause of humanity shall be won in the shortest time, with the smallest loss.

Setting the Battle in Array

Fill your mind with a picture of what it is all about. Thrice armed is he whose cause is just. This is the Armageddon in which Autocracy and Imperialism are to plunge to their end. It is a living sacrifice upon the altar of a world wide democracy. which shall be permeated with and directed by a genuine Christocracy – a citizenship of God-anointed men.

This is the end of the "divine right of kings" and the beginning of the divine right of the individual to work together for the good of all.

What one said of Napoleon may now be said of another usurper of power: "That man embarrassed God and God had to destroy him."

Then know you that the battle is the Lord's. Hold yourself and yours, in a clear perception of being enfolded in the Almighty presence and purpose, where no evil can befall thee nor evil come nigh thine.

Clothe yourself and them with the sense of His Almightiness. Sing in your soul, and behold it as true that, "Christ is over all, through all, and in you all." Picture yourself as "hid with Christ in God." Make a marching song of the Armor of St. Patrick.

Christ is with you, Christ before you,
Christ behind you, Christ within you,
Christ beneath you, Christ above you,
Christ at your right, Christ at your left,
Christ in breadth, length, and height.
Christ on land, and sea, and sky.

Sing in rhythm with their marching feet, and charging columns, and you will clothe them with power to ignore enemies and dangers, and to defy bombs and bullets, and to go forward to the victory for a higher and better humanity.

The Shadow Men

Faith, hope, love, courage, and all virtues are of the hidden man. If the hidden man of the heart be fearless because filled with a great love, then the seen man of the flesh is kept from all evil and danger.

Behold for yourself and him, the vision of Elisha at Dothan. When they were surrounded with enemies, he prayed that his companion's eyes be opened that he might see things as they were in the realm of the actual. And the veil was lifted and he saw the mountains and valleys filled with the chariots and horsemen of the Almighty.

It is something more than fancy that St. George appeared to the English in the midst of trying conditions, and that Joan of Arc came again to lead the French at a crisis, and that the White Christ was seen comforting the wounded. These shadow people are all real. Seeing that we are surrounded by so great a company of witnesses let us go forth to victory, knowing that they who are for us are more than all they that be against us.

The Architect's Plan

Receive the fact of spiritual supremacy. Count it a fact now. Accept its results as realizable now for yourself and yours, Hold for your loved one, not the picture of carnage and death, but see him clothed with the protecting panoply of God.

Remember that there is a great creative force in the world which immediately moves to produce that which you mentally picture out. Assure yourself that every result comes from a cause, that the creative spiritual forces are set in motion by your faith and your will, and "It shall be unto thee even as thou wilt."

Remember that you are to work out your salvation, health, and safety while God works in you both to will and to do. Hold then before you the divine architect's plan: "For we all with open face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are changed from glory to glory after his image by the spirit of the Lord." Then you and yours shall be clothed with that same power that dwelt with him by which he was able to pass through the midst of his enemies at Nazareth and go on his way.

With this plan before you, prayer becomes not only asking, but claiming, receiving, declaring and commanding. The promise of the Eternal God is that, "It Shall Come to Pass," and the verdict of human history is: "And it Came to Pass."

The Sword of the Lord

Thrust now thy hand into the armory of God and grasp the old sword for offensive and defensive work.

"Fear not for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee, yea I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness."

"A thousand shall fall at my side, and ten thousand at my right hand, but it shall not come nigh me."

"No evil shall befall me, neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling."

"Fear not; I will help thee."

"With him (the enemy) is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles."

"The Battle is the Lord's."

The Modern Miracles

The daily press dispatches told a short time since of how, as a result of such "treatment" as that suggested here, that men have gone through a veritable inferno on the firing line and have come out unscathed and untouched.

A Mr. F. L. Rawson of London is credited with having given these "prayer treatments" to individuals and to whole companies, so that they have gone across "no man's land" through a hail of steel and lead, and have been so protected in this mighty fortress that they lost not a man. One officer, Colonel McGregor, in a letter to Mr. Rawson, told how he treated his entire regiment in this manner and that for eight weeks they had been under fire without the loss of a single man, although other regiments were losing men daily.

Archdeacon David E. Holt, my sponsor in the ministry, told me once that he enlisted in the Confederate army when but a few months over fifteen years old. As he left home with a mother's blessing and prayer, he went feeling the keeping power of the Covenant-keeping God, and passed through thirty-seven battles of the Civil War without receiving a scratch.

He pictured a morning before one of the bloodiest battles of the war, how the word went forth that there was to be church services by the army chaplains. He went, but there was neither preaching nor ceremony. Men filed by a crude altar by the thousand, kneeling for a moment while a crumb of bread and a drop of wine was given them, with the words, "The Body of the Lord. The Blood of the Lord." And in this sacramental imagery of power there was an undergirding with strength and a surrounding with power which made them invincible that day.

On the service flag of my church there were the names of twenty-nine men and three women who went to the front. Over them there was daily lifted the Armor of Light. Many of them went through all the inferno of those terrible days, but they all returned safely, only two having been reported in the hospital for minor ills.

De Profundis

Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice: let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If Thou, Lord, shouldst mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with Thee that Thou mayest be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in His word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning; I say, more than they that watch for the morning. Let Israel hope in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption. And He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. – Psalm 130.

A Mighty Fortress of Divine Protection

Entering Into the Fortress: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in him will I trust.

Immunity and Protection: Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisesome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor far the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague came nigh thy dwelling.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder; the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under foot.

Realization: Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high because he hath known My Name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My salvation. – Psalm 91.

Prayers

Oh, Eternal God, maker and preserver of all, in whom I live and move, and have my being, and who dost live and move and have thy Being in me; of whose Undying Life I am part as my finger is part of my hand, give me full realization of my oneness with thee, so that I go forth to battle clothed with the whole armor of God. And bring me back in peace and safety, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, who hath made and preserved us a nation, guide our President with wisdom from on high, and sustain him with divine strength. Instruct the leaders of our army and navy with divine understanding. Accept our boys whom we gladly give to the cause of the world's freedom. Keep them safely by land, and by sea, and by sky. And bring them again as the shining heralds of victory and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, who art all Power and Life, whose mercy is from everlasting, and whose love faileth never, keep in thy tender care thy child, so that no harm befall him. Encompass him with thy power and let thy presence go with him and guard him. Help him to realize that his life is one with thee, and that he is partaker of thy deathless life, and thine Unspoilable Health. Let the consciousness of thy presence be to him a shield and buckler. In the quiet of rest and in the storm of battle, let thy keeping power be a safe refuge for him, so that his whole body, soul and spirit, may be preserved unharmed to the glory of the Master and chief shepherd, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Songs of the Ages

The Song of Moses
Oh, High and Lofty One inhabiting Eternity,
Clothing Thyself with Beauty as with a Garment,
Hiding Thy majesty under the names of relation;
I know that Thou Art, and that Thou Art the Rewarder
Of them that diligently seek Thee;
Deliver me by the might of thy great name – I AM.

The Song of the Lamb
Oh, Face of the Blessed, behold me bowing
With every kindred, tribe and tongue,
In glad allegiance to thy loving care.
Breathe into me the breath of thy deathless life;
And feed me with thine unfailing substance,
And infold me in the secret place of Eternal Safety and Power,
Thy Matchless name – Jesus Christ.

The Song of the Angels
Fear not: for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David,
a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
Glory to God in the Highest,
And on earth peace;
Good will toward men.
